Life Insurance Code of Practice review
Submissions to the Life Code review are now available.
About the review
From 1 October 2025, the Life Insurance Code of Practice (Life Code) will go through an independent review to ensure it continues to serve the best interests of Australians, keeps pace with regulatory and legislative change, is easy to understand and works effectively in practice.
The Life Code is an initiative from the life insurance industry and was created to help life insurers provide the protection that suits Australians when they need it most, in an accountable and transparent way.
The Council of Australian Life Insurers (CALI) is responsible for the Life Code. CALI’s mission is to ensure Australians view life insurance and the industry as accessible, understandable and trusted.
This review is an important opportunity to strengthen protections for customers. It will listen and respond to the voices of everyone, including policyholders, regulators, consumer advocates and insurers.
What is the Life Insurance
Code of Practice?
The Life Code is a set of standards that life insurers promise to uphold when looking after their customers.
It covers the entire life insurance journey, from how products are designed and offered, right through to how claims are handled and complaints are managed. It also sets out extra support for people who may be vulnerable, facing financial hardship or living with a mental health condition.
The independent Life Code Compliance Committee (Life CCC) closely monitors and reports on the life insurance industry’s compliance with the Life Code. The Life CCC also has powers to impose sanctions and financial penalties on life insurers.
